Pat and Winnie Clark

Pat Clark, the son of James and Elllen Clark, was married February 11, 1920 at Red Oak, Iowa, to Winnefred ‘Winnie’ Smith.

Winnie was the daughter of Jack Smith and Mary Ward. Mary Ward had come to the United States form County Monaghenm, Ireland, when she was seventeen. Her parents were Tom Ward and Mary Keenan. Her sister, Kate and husband, Owen Higgens sent money for her passage to the United States. She came to Red Oak where she met and married Jack Smith, the son of Pat Smith and Mary Welsh. They came by covered wagon from Poughkeepsie, New York. When they reached the Mississippi River, they had to float their wagons across because of high wager. They farmed near Red Oak until they retired.

Pat and Winnie moved to the Clark family farm southwest of Sloan after they were married. They had four children. Mary Ellen was born January 27, 1921. She married Gene Ring and lives at LaCross, Wisconsin. Gene died September 13, 1979. Gertrude Rose was born August 20, 1922 and married Mack Kenney; they farmed near Sloan. Patricia Helen was born Octobe r8, 1923 she married James Settlemire and lives on a farm near Lima, Ohio. Dennis Thomas was born December 28, 1924; he married Rae Ellen Peck and lives on a farm near Sergeant Bluff. In 1943, Pat and Winnie moved to a farm northeast of Salix.

In 1944, they bought a farm northeast of Sergeant Bluff and lived there until Pat died of a stroke February 6, 1974. Winnie died of heart failure April 20, 1974.
