Carrington Family
By Mrs Duane CarringtonFrank Carrington, son of Charles and Clara Carrington, was born December 22, 1869, in Detroit, Michigan, and moved to Raymond, Iowa, when he was a boy. Soon afterward the family moved to Rock Branch, Iowa, where he married Lydia Weaver, a daughter of Jacob and Mary Weaver. Lydia was a granddaughter of Mr and Mrs David Grosh, first settlers in Arlington Township. Frank and Lydia bought their farm in 1893 where it soon established the name, ‘Carrington Corner’ that travelers used as guide in going to Moville. Frank was county supervisor for 14 years. During this time he helped get the right-of-way for highway 20. To finance the project, farmers along the way were assessed a paving fee and he helped get this fee refunded. C A Depue invented the Depue tractor, and Frank Carrington. They located a manufacturing plant in Clinton, Iowa, in 1918 and continued until 1924.
Frank and Lydia had three children, Hazel, born February 14, 1892; Raymond, born March 30, 1894; and Lyle, born August 12, 1912.
A church was built in 1891 a half mile north and on the east side of the road from the Carrington farm. It was called the Beulah Church. Hazel Carrington played the organ there as a young girl. Lumber from the old church was later ued in the corn crib built on the farm.
Raymond took up farming as a young man and remained in the area, later to buy his father’s farm. Raymond married Winnie Spencer in 1919 and they had two chidren, Irene and Duane. Irene and Duane attended country school a mile north of their farm. Irene attended college at Wayne State in Nebraska, and became a school teacher, later to marry Harry Longval of Sloan. They had two children, Steve and Marsha. Steve and Family live at Conyers, Georgia, and Marsha Longvall Ullrich and family live at Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
Duane served in the Air Force during World War Ii and was on the island of Guam one year. Returning from the service, Duane attended Iowa State College at Ames. He returned home to farm with his father and alter to take over his father’s farming operation. Duane married Ramona Knapp, August 27, 1950. They had three sons, Ronald, born September 19, 1951; Donald, born Janaury 28, 1955; and Kenneth, born February 23, 1956. All three boys attended elementary and high school at Woodbury Central. Ronald attended college at Iowa University at Iowa City to become a pharmicist, Donald attended Iowa State at Ames, Iowa, taking agriculture and Kenneth attended Western Iowa Technical School in Sioux City taking auto mechanics. All thre boys were married the summer of 1980. Ronald married Karen Mazaika and lives in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. Donald married Julie Temple, have a daughter, Kate, born April 27, 1983; they live in Genoa, Colorado. Kenneth married Kimberly Pierce of Anthon. They have the K and K Service Station there.
Duane and Ramona are still farming the original Carrington farm and it will become a Century Farm in 1987.
