Thomas McLellan ‘Mac’ Belfrage
By John BelfrageThomas McLellan ‘Mac’ Belfrage, the third son of Wilfred and Winnie Woodford Belfrage, was born January 13, 1918, on the family farm south of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, and graduated from Sergeant Bluff High School in 1935. He worked for a time for the Chicago, St Paul & Pacific Railroad.
He was a member of the Iowa National Guard and during World War II was sent with the first group from this area, Headquarters Detachment, 133rd Infantry, to Camp Clairborne, Louisiana, as a Staff Sergeant for training. He was given a medical discharged in July 1941.
He worked for Chesterman Company in Sioux City, Iowa. He married LaVonne ‘Bonnie’ Schweiberger, November 17, 1941. In the early 1950’s, Mac joined the family farming operation with his father and brother, John. He continued farming until 1969 when he and Bonnie joined the JC Penney Company. They are retired and lived in Sioux City, Iowa.
They had three sons who all graduated form Sergeant Bluff High School: Robert ‘Bob’ and his wife, Ann, have two children, Tim and Chris and live at Castle Rock, Colorado; William ‘Billy’ a Vietnam Veteran, deceased; and Roger who has a wife, Cindy, and a daughter, Jennifer, and lives in Denver, Colorado.
