OBITUARY.

Stewart Oxley, a well known citizen of Decorah and former resident near Ossian, died on Saturday last, September 4, after a lingering illness. Mr. Oxley was born May 20, 1842, in Coshocton county, Ohio, where he grew to manhood. He enlisted in Co. I, 51st Ohio infantry, and served throughout the civil war, being discharged on May 29, 1865, at Camp Chase, Ohio He was attached to Gen. Miles’ division of the Army of the Ohio, later being assigned to the 21st corps of the Cumberland. He participated in some of the memorable battles, notably Stone River, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain and Mission Ridge. He was taken prisoner at Cassville, Ga., May 17, 1864, and was confined in Confederate prisons at Cahaba, Ala., and Meridan, Miss. For 330 days. On his discharge at Vicksburg he was sent with 2160 ex-prisoners up the Mississippi on the steamer “Sultana,” which was destroyed by an explosion north of Memphis. After the war he came to Iowa and was married on March 6, 1867, at Waukon, to Emma Williams. Four children were born to them,--Ida and Ernest of Decorah, Mrs. Nellie Bandle of Burr Oak, and Aulden (deceased). By trade Mr. Oxley was a carpenter, but the greater part of his life in Iowa was devoted to agriculture. For many years he was a member of Col. Hughes Post and at the time of his death was quartermaster. He was a man of more than usual intelligence and took great interest in the affairs of the state and nation. The funeral was held at 1 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, at his home in the first ward, Rev. H. H. Green officiating, and the remains were taken to Centennial cemetery for burial.

The remains of Stewart Oxley, who died at his home in Decorah Sunday, will be brought to the Centennial cemetery to-day for burial.
