Old Settler Died in the West.
Through a letter from A. M. Perry to his sister, Mrs. Wm. Knowlton, we learn that Martin V. Rotnor died on July 7th at the Soldiers’ Home at Orting, Wash. This is the only news that has been received of Mr. Rotnor in many years and he was supposed to have been dead for a good many years. He was an early day resident of Winneshiek county. Born in 1834 in Illinois, he came here with his parents sixty-three years ago and settled in Section 36, Canoe township. He was married fifty-seven years ago to Sarilla Drake, daughter of Simeon Drake, Sr. Two daughters were born to them, but as far as is known neither the daughters nor his wife are now living. Mr. Rotner enlisted in August, 1861, in Decorah in Company H. 9th Iowa Infantry. In the letter which brought the news of his death Mr. Perry, who was one of his comrades in the 9th Iowa, speaks of him as one of the best soldiers in the ranks. The funeral was held at Orting and burial was made at Bellingham, Wash. The only relative of Mr. Rotnor remaining in Decorah is Mrs. Geo. Hislop.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he is buried in the Bayview Cemetery in Bellingham, WA.
