C. O. MALTBY DEAD.
Former County Supervisor and Prominent Citizen Answered Final Summons Yesterday Afternoon.
After a short illness, due to a diseased condition of the heart, Corydon O. Maltby died yesterday afternoon about three o’clock at the home of his son-in-law, M. D. Whitney, in Hesper township. The news of Mr. Maltby’s death was not altogether unexpected as it was known that for a week past it had been necessary to administer stimulants to maintain heart action. He had had several spells of illness due to trouble with his heart. The last one occurred at the home of his sister, Mrs. D. C. Graham, about three weeks ago. He was removed to the home of his son-in-law week before last. Mr. Maltby was born May 15, 1838, in Portland Co., N. Y., moved with his parents to Kenosha Co., Wis., in 1843, and to Lake Co., Ill., in 1849. In 1861 he enlisted in Company F. 37th Illinois Infantry, and participated in the siege and capture of Vicksburg, and numerous other battles. He was mustered out in Chicago in September, 1864. Coming to Allamakee county that fall he located two miles north of Waukon. In February, 1870, he moved to Canoe township, this county, where he maintained his home for many years, subsequently selling out and purchasing land in Hesper township where he continued to reside. He was married May 22, 1850, to Mary R. Gilbert. Mrs. Maltby has been dead a number of years. Mr. Maltby is survived by his children Frank G. Maltby and Fannie R. Whitney and his sisters, Mrs. J. J. Marsh and Mrs. Graham. Mr. Maltby was always known as a substantial, dependable man, kind and loyal. Beside serving as assessor for eight years in Canoe township, he was a member of the Board of Supervisors for several terms. His death will be mourned by many friends throughout the county who extend sympathy to the bereaved relatives.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he is buried in Phelps Cemetery.
