Lawrence “Larry” Ehler, age 70, of Calmar, IA passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at Accura Healthcare in Cresco, Iowa, following a gradual decline from advanced hydrocephalus.

Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, December 23, 2024, at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Parish in Festina, Iowa with Rev. Henry Huber officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 22, at the Festina Parish Center with a rosary at 2:30 p.m. There is no visitation prior to the service on Monday.

He was born at Smith Memorial Hospital in Decorah, Iowa on Feb 28, 1954, to Edmund and Sylvia (Hageman) Ehler. He received all his sacraments at Our Lady of Seven Dolors in Festina. Larry attended St. Mary Elementary School in Festina and graduated from South Winneshiek High School in 1973. After high school, he attended NICC mechanic courses.

Larry was a lifelong farmer. Along with his brother, Ken, they were fourth-generation stewards of the family’s Century Farm. He enjoyed milking cows and operating John Deere tractors.

He liked to play in euchre tournaments. He enjoyed food but wasn’t overly fond of vegetables. After family dinners, he liked to engage in numerous rounds of euchre. When he was young, Larry liked to play practical jokes on his sisters. He shared a sense of humor with those closest to him. When asked by healthcare providers how he felt, he would grin and reply “with my hands.” The staff at Accura were generous with their compassion while caring for Larry. Thanks to them, he was content and comfortable in his final years.

He enjoyed attending live music concerts at the local county fairs. During activities at Accura Healthcare in Cresco, where he spent his final years, he was known to be happiest when country music was the entertainment. The older nephews recall spending lots of time with Larry and Kenny on the farm during summer vacation.

Larry is survived by one brother: Ken (Cathy) of Calmar: two sisters: Theresa Lou (Loren) Schmitt of Calmar and Marianne Ehler of Edina, MN, and sister-in-law: Bonnie Ehler of Urbandale, IA, His five nephews: Matthew (Rachael) Schmitt and their sons, Edmund and Bennett; Brian (Danielle) Schmitt and their sons, Ethen and Owen; Kurt (Shantel) Schmitt and their sons, Oliver, Bodhi and Kane; Andrew Ehler and Adam Ehler.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Edmund and Sylvia Ehler, one brother: Terrance Ehler and sister-in-law: Audrey Ehler, maternal grandparents: Philip and Theresia Hageman, paternal grandparents: William and Rosina Ehler, and numerous aunts and uncles.

In Lieu of flowers donations may be made towards masses and activities for the residents of Accura.
