Stricken by Paralysis.
On Monday morning Anthony Bernatz was stricken with paralysis a moment or two after arising from his bed. When he got up he sneezed and coughed two or three times and then collapsed upon his bed. A physician was called at once, and an examination disclosed his left side was paralyzed. Just what the outcome will be is not possible to say at present. During the past two years Mr. Bernatz has failed gradually in health, and within the past two or three months the decline has been especially noticeable. It is thought his recent condition traces back to two years ago when he was struck by a motorcycle and sustained a shock that affected his whole system. Mr. Bernatz has been for years one of the county’s leading manufacturers, first as a miller in Fort Atkinson, and later in the same business in Decorah. He has a host of friends who will learn of his affliction with genuine regret.

- The foregoing was written Monday afternoon. Mr. Bernatz lingered until early yesterday morning, when death claimed him. A biography which appears in Clark’s history of Winneshiek county says that Mr. Bernatz was born in August, 1843, in Bavaria, Germany, and came to America with his parents at the age of three years. The family home was established at Prairie du Chien in 1849. Here Mr. Bernatz secured his education. In 1854 the family moved to McGregor, where it remained until 1860 when the elder Bernatz purchased the flouring mills at Smithfield, Iowa. Anthony Bernatz worked for his father in the mills at Smithfield and after in the mills at Fort Atkinson. He was also his father’s business partner for a number of years and was later in partnership with his brother George at Fort Atkinson. When they sold out at this place they moved to Decorah and purchased the Ice Cave and Heively mills. After two years Mr. Bernatz purchased his brother’s interest, the first of A. Bernatz & Sons was formed and continued to operate the mills here until 1903, when Mr. Bernatz retired and turned over the business to his sons and the two mills have since been run under the same name of A. Bernatz & Sons. Mr. Bernatz was married on Aug. 5th, 1866, to Miss Cassie A. Minert who, with their sons Charles, William, John and Archie, and their daughters Mrs. L. A. Marsh, Bertha, Blanche and Hazel, survive him.
- During his life in Winneshiek county Mr. Bernatz has been one of the substantial supporters of the Democratic party, and served one term as a member of the City Council of Decorah. He has been a devoted husband and father and enjoyed the esteem of a host of friends throughout the county. In their bereavement the family are comforted by the sympathy of the community.
