Jacob “Jake” Sand, 79, formerly of Ossian, died from heart failure on Sept. 6, 2024 in Henderson, Nevada.
Jake was born to Sylvia (Forde) and Nanfred Sand Nov. 23, 1944 and was raised on the family farm until he graduated from South Winneshiek High School in 1962. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the Air Force and served four years as a medical technician.
He began his career in cabinetmaking in Henderson working for his brother-in-law, Chuck Pinch, of Rosecrest Cabinets. Eventually Jake started his own business, Sand Cabinets, in Boulder City, Nevada.
Jake’s early pastimes were swimming in Lake Mead and competing in 100-mile dirt bike races in the desert. Later he loved playing golf and riding his recumbent e-trike for exercise. He also enjoyed target shooting, making his own ammunition.
After retiring, Jake moved back to Henderson to live with his sister, Janet Pinch.
Jake was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Bob (Verna), Greg, Bud and Richard (Tina); sisters: Helen (Dean) Schaeffer and Shirley (John) Brainard; brothers-in-law: Tom Golden and Chuck Pinch; and nephew Bradley Brainard.
Survivors include sisters: Marge Golden, Janet Pinch and Elaine Evans; brother-in-law Bob Evans, sister-in-law Carol Sand; and many nephews and nieces and their respective children.
Jake will be remembered for his unique sense of humor.
