Janice Brom, 90 of Ossian, Iowa passed away Monday, October 21, 2024 at Copper Creek Senior Living in West Union, Iowa. Janice was born in Dubuque Iowa on October 9, 1934 to Edward Brom and Hilda (Seipp) Brom. She was baptized and confirmed in her faith at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Dubuque, Iowa. Janice moved with her family to Ossian Iowa in 1946 where she attended St. Francis de Sales School, graduating in 1952. Janice continued her education and graduated from the Mercy School of Nursing in Dubuque in 1955.

Her entire life was dedicated to the service of others. Janice worked as a registered nurse in Dubuque at Mercy Hospital and Xavier Hospital, as well as Queen’s Hospital in Honolulu Hawaii. She joined the United States Air Force Nurse Corp in 1964. Janice served her country at multiple bases stationed throughout the world and in the United States. After enlisting, her first assignment was in California; from there she was selected to attend the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine in Texas where she obtained her Flight Nurse Wings. After flight school she was sent to Clark Air Force Base, Philippine Islands where she worked in casualty staging unit, caring for Vietnam War wounded. Then she was sent to the USAF Academy in Colorado and then on to Spain. From there, she was selected to attend the USAF School of Health Care Sciences where she graduated as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. After graduation she sat for the very first National Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Board Exam. She continued her service as a PNP-C at bases in Michigan, Arizona and Nebraska. She was honorably discharged in 1984 after twenty years of service with the rank of Lt. Colonel. She received multiple Ribbons and Medals including: National Defense Service Medal, Longevity Service Award with 2 oak leaf clusters, Good Conduct Medal, Outstanding Unit Award, Commendation Medal and Meritorious Service Medal.

Upon retiring from the USAF, she returned to Ossian. Janice was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, the Rosary Society, a Eucharistic Minister and a Rosary leader. She served on the Parish Council, was a member of the Ossian Senior Hospice Board of Directors, and delivered Meals on Wheels.

Jan loved to sew and for many years used this talent in collaboration with the members of the St. Francis de Sales Sewing Circle to produce quilts for charitable groups, serving the underprivileged and battered women organizations. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking, reading and spending time with family and friends.

Surviving Janice are her sister, Dianne Kruchek of Alden, Iowa; brother, Mark (Darrel Differding) Brom of Palm Springs, California; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward (1971) and Hilda (1996) Brom; two brothers, Fr. D. Giles Brom (2002) and Warren Brom (2004); sister, Patrice E. Trice (2019) and brothers-in-law, Edgar Trice (2007) and Clarence Kruchek (2015).

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, October 29, 2024 St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, Iowa with Rev. Donald Hertges as the Celebrant. There will be a two-hour visitation from 9:00 am until mass time at the church on Tuesday.

Burial will follow at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Cemetery in Ossian, Iowa.
