THE SILENT REAPER.
Edward Blakeman died at his home, the Hill View Fruit Farm, north of Decorah on Wednesday afternoon, August 5th, on gangrene, after an illness of two we{e}ks and five days.
Edward Blakeman was born at Parma Center, N. J., October 9, 1844. He came to Winneshiek county in 1867 and after living at several places located 21 years ago where he died. On June 16, 1868, he was married to Augusta Leach at Freeport. Four children were born to them, three of whom are living—Walter Blakeman of Decorah, Howard Blakeman, Burlington, Iowa, and Mrs. Nellie Olson of Lincoln iMnn.{sic}. Mrs. James Hallman is deceased.
When the news of his death came, even though it was not unexpected, all of the older citizens felt a personal loss,--the loss of a personal friend. Edward Blakeman was a man who chose the quiet walks of life, exemplary in his habits, always with a hearty, cheerful welcome to all friends as he met them. He early was impressed with the beautiful in nature and he turned his attention to horticulture, and it was through his efforts that the Winneshiek County Horticultural Society was organized and by his untiring energy it was kept alive. He was the first president of the Northwestern Horticultural Society of Iowa. He was president of the Ice Cave creamery in Decorah. Early in life he joined the Masonic lodge in Decorah and has been even{sic} since an earnest member. On Sunday afternoon last, on the lawn of his home, under the trees and surrounded by the flowers he loved, the funeral was held, Rev. Mahlon Willett officiating. When the funeral cortege reached Decorah the members of Great Lights Lodge, A. F. & A. M. quietly took their place as honorary pall bearers and followed him to the Phelps cemetery where he was consigned to his last resting place by the Masonic ritual.We have tearfully folded his cold, white hands
Lovingly over his breast;
We have kissed the pale lips, forever closed,
And aid him down gently to rest.We have laid him to rest with a void in our hearts,
In anguish weep over his tomb’
Yet we would not recall him, where earth’s chilling winds
Blight the flowers in their loveliest bloomWe would not recall him. Ah, no! He has gone
Where life’s surges can trouble no more;
To that beautiful home in the land of the blest,
On that beautiful shining shore.For we know there’s a home I Our Father’s house
A home for us all in the skied;
And we know that the one we have loved so well
Has gained that Paradise.CARD OF THANKS.
We desire to return our thanks to our many friends who is our hour of need turned to us with kindly administrations and help
