Carl Adolph “Carlos” Kuhn was born September 18th, 1964, the third child of Julian and Virginia Kuhn of Fort Atkinson, Iowa. He graduated from Turkey Valley High School in 1983. He married the love of his life, Michelle “Shelley” Grant, on October 6th, 1990. In 1992, their first son Michael was born and in 1997, their second son, Jacob was born.
Carl spent his life as a steward of the land. He learned the trade from his father Julian, and they farmed together until Julian’s death in 2009. His greatest joys were managing the livestock and tending the land. He passed on all of his knowledge and love of farming to his son, Jacob.
He continued to farm until his very last day.
Carl was famous for several incredible dishes, most notably the “Garbage Pail Goulash” and the “Big A Peanut Butter Cookie".
He enjoyed spending his evenings in the workshop helping Jacob build raised garden beds and many other projects. Taking road trips to Independence for supper with Michael and his wife Katelynn and going to Cedar Falls for the weekly Menards run.
Let’s not forget the countless hours of YouTube Farming and Alaska Living videos he relaxed to.
His weekends were spent with family, trapping the pesky beaver on the creek on the Other Place, and the not-to-be-forgotten Saturday date nights with Shelley including supper and grocery shopping.
He was also very dedicated to his parents, neighbors, and friends; and he was always willing to give a helping hand to anyone that needed it.
He offered countless pieces of knowledge, good advice, and wisdom to his sons. He made us into the men we are today and we are eternally grateful.
Carl is survived by his wife, Shelley, his sons Michael (Katelynn) Kuhn and Jacob (Jillian) Kuhn. His mother, Virginia Kuhn. His brothers, Mark (Judy) Kuhn; their children, Logan Kuhn (fiancé Sarah Lundeen) and Reilly (Aiden) Wojciehowski and Samuel Kuhn (Karen Ulrich) with his children Ryan Kuhn and Melanie (Kyle) Gappa and their children (Eleanor and Aubrey Gappa). His sister, Nancy (Robert) Upmeyer, and their children Paul Upmeyer, Maria (Dominic) Gentile, and daughter, Lily. His sister-in-law Valerie Boice and her family and two brothers-in-law Gregory Grant and Kim Grant and their families. One step-sister-in-law Sharon Moffitt and her family. His step brothers-in-law Dale and Tom Gross and their families.
He is also survived by his first grandchild, Maryn Kuhn, the daughter of Jacob and Jillian. Carl was just entering his new role as Grandpa and talked about her every day.
Carl is preceded in death by his father, Julian Kuhn. His grandparents, Adolph and Gertrude Kuhn and John J and Lena Langreck. Stepmother-in-law, Geraldine Grant, and father and mother-in-law, Roger and Clarice Grant.
God looked down on the 8th day and said, "I need a Caretaker.”
It had to be somebody who’d plow deep and straight and not cut corners; somebody to seed, weed, feed, breed and rake and disc and plow and plant and tie the fleece and strain the milk and replenish the self-feeder and finish a hard week’s work with a five-mile drive to church; somebody who would bale a family together with the soft strong bonds of sharing, who would laugh, and then sigh, and then reply, with smiling eyes, when his son says that he wants to spend his life "doing what dad does”.
-So God made a Farmer.
