DEATH CALLS NEWSPAPER MAN.
E. S. Gjellum, Former Editor of Decorah Posten, Passes Away Monday at His Home Near Fowler, Colo.A telegraph dispatch to Decorah Posten, received Monday, brought the intelligence that E. S. Gjellum, a former editor of Posten, died that morning at his home on a farm near Fowler, Colo., after a long illness from tuberculosis. Mr. Gjellum came to Decorah Posten in 1885, having previously served for two years as editor of the Albert Lea Posten. For fifteen years he was a member of the editorial force, most of the time being editor-in-chief. He was an indomitable worker and student, seemingly unable to save himself, and it was due to the high tension under which he labored at all times that his health failed, compelling him to give up his life here and seek outdoor employment. The mild climate of Colorado appealed to him at this juncture and he sought a home near Fowler, where he has continued to reside. While he could never hope for a restoration of health, it was given to him to live out the greater portion of man’s allotted span.
Mr. Gjellum was born in Utica, Wis., in 1852. There he grew to young manhood. His education was secured in the common schools, supplemented by studies at Luther College, where he graduated in 1870, followed by terms at the Iowa University and two years at Johns Hopkins university, Baltimore. It was after this schooling that he took up newspaper work. He is survived by several children, Mrs. Gjellum having died a number of years ago.
The old Decorah friends of Mr. Gjellum remember him as a man of keen perception, good judgment, steadfast in his friendships, and true to high ideals of citizenship.Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows was born Feb. 1852 and that he died Feb. 9, 1914 and is buried in the Lakewood Cemetery in Albert Lea. MN.
