Rose Rilling, age 93, of Fort Atkinson, passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, while residing at Solon Care Center in Solon, IA.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at St. John’s Catholic Church, 201 Oak Street in Fort Atkinson, IA, with Rev. Nick Radloff presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Friday, July 12, 2024, at the Helms Funeral Home Chekal Chapel, 201 Main Street in Fort Atkinson, IA and from 9:30 – 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home Saturday morning.

Rose Agnes Schmitt was born on July 25, 1930, the youngest daughter of Peter and Mary (Blong) Schmitt on the family farm, rural St Lucas, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Merlin C. Rilling on May 28, 1952, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, St. Lucas, IA. Together they farmed crops, milked registered dairy cattle, raised hogs, ducks, geese, and chickens, and later beef cattle. Rose enjoyed baking, quilting, gardening, puzzles, and mind-activities including Word Search and Sudoku. She was a member of St John’s Catholic Church, where she was active in church activities. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. After suffering a fall in 2018, she resided with her daughter, Kathleen, in Indianapolis, IN. In 2022, after recovering from a stroke, Rose returned to Iowa. She established residence at the Solon Care Center, enabling her to spend more time with friends and family.

Rose is survived by two daughters: Eileen (Steve) Hageman, Solon, IA and Kathleen Pavon, Indianapolis, IN; two sons: Kenneth Rilling, Fort Atkinson, IA and Eugene (Donna) Rilling, Center Point, IA; three grandchildren: Holly (Derek) Flynn, Solon, IA; Christa (Ian) Richards, Des Moines, IA; and Chad (Bethany) Hageman, Ames, IA; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law: Therese Schmitt, Fort Atkinson, IA and LaVina Rilling, El Cajon, CA.

Rose was preceded in death by her husband: Merlin in 2009; parents: Peter and Mary Schmitt; three brothers: John E. Schmitt, Roman Schmitt and Alfred Schmitt; four sisters: Coletta Busta, Leona Dietzenbach, Theola Schaefer, and Cordula Doucet; eight brothers-in-law: Dean Rilling, Glenn Rilling, Leo Schmitt, Jerome Hackman, Jacob Busta, Jim Schaefer, Joe Doucet and Wilfred Dietzenbach; and five sisters-in-law: Darlyne Hackman, Rosemar (Rosie) Rilling, Jeanette Schmitt, Rita Schmitt, and Madonna Schmitt.
