Marvin Louis Harvey Ihde was born on August 10, 1928, at home in Frankville Township to Richard and Alma (Meyer) Ihde. He attended country school through the 8th grade at Hyde Country School #6 in Frankville Township. He was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia in 1942. Following school, he worked at the home farm for 8 years. On December 12, 1950, he was drafted into the United States Army. His basic training was at Camp McCoy in Wisconsin. He also served at Fort Sill in Oklahoma from February 1952 until he was honorably discharged on December 12, 1952.

Following his time in the service, he began working for McArthur’s Appliance and Bottle Gas. He worked for McArthur’s until they were sold to Thermogas. He began working for Thermogas on January 15, 1962. His first day of work was on the 15th which was a payday, and he was not paid. He always liked to joke that he was never paid for his first day at Thermogas. He was a serviceman for Thermogas until his retirement in 1990. Marvin enjoyed working and ended up working for himself until the age of 84. It was hard for him to give that up because he was very happy working for himself and putting furnaces in and repairing them for other people.

Marvin was united in marriage to Dorothy Geneva Kellison on June 10, 1956. The two met because McArthur’s was located next to Ann’s Beauty Shop where Dorothy worked. Marvin and Dorothy were introduced by Blanche McArthur and Hattie Musser. They made kolaches and invited both of them over. Marvin and Dorothy made their home on Grove Street in Decorah for two years. They moved to 404 Day Street in March 1958 and rented an apartment there until 1960 when they purchased the house and moved downstairs. They rented 2 apartments upstairs in their house and had numerous renters over the last 60 plus years.

Marvin enjoyed going to area racetracks and watching his grandsons Mitch and Dan race. He was their biggest fan and always said he taught them everything they knew. He also enjoyed keeping his blue chevy pickup clean and going for rides with Dorothy. Marvin also enjoyed giving rides to all 7 of his grandchildren when they attended preschool.

Marvin is survived by his wife, Dorothy Ihde. Children: Audrey (Les) Hovden, Sandy (Jim) Eggers, and Kevin (Tammy) Ihde. Grandchildren: Mitch (Kia) Hovden, Dan (Jade) Hovden, Haley Eggers, Brittney (Travis) Fox, Tiffany Brown, Kyle (Kelsey) Ihde, and Josh (Sarah) Ihde and nine great grandchildren: Makena, Cameron, Olivia, Nora, Briella, Kaliyah, Karlie, Karsen and Blaire. Sibling: Orma Quam Sisters-in-law Arla Ihde and Kay Ihde.

He was preceded in death by his son, Marvin R. Ihde. Parents: Richard and Alma Ihde. In Laws Harold and Myrtle Kellison Siblings: LeRoy Ihde, Jeanette Schroeder, Donald Ihde and Norman (Bud) Ihde and Sister-in-Law Jeanette Ihde, Brothers-in-Law Kenneth Schroeder and Milton Quam and niece Joyce Ihde and nephew Jim Ihde.

Whenever anyone passed away that Marvin knew, he would say “their work is done.” Now we can say your work is done Marvin.
