Grandfather Jos. Kortan died Sunday morning, April 6th, 1913, at his home after a month’s serious illness with heart trouble. He was born in Bohemia, Sept. 14th, 1832, coming to America in 1869 and first settling in Spillville. In 1858 he was married in Bohemia to Miss Anna Rezac. To them were born five children, two of whom died in infancy. He leaves to mourn his wife and three daughters, Mrs. John Silhacek of this place, Mrs. Thos. Barloon of near Fort Atkinson and Mrs. Jos. Klimesh from near Protivin. Mr. and Mrs. Kortan resided at Spillville about two years ago. On Tuesday morning the 8th at 10 o’clock, at the St. Wenceslaus church occurred the funeral, Rev. Ballon officiating. The pall bearers were John Silhacek, Thos. Barloon, Jos. Klimesh, Sr., W. J. Silhacek, Fr. Klimesh and Jos. Klimesh, Jr.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows this was Josef. He was born in Sept. 13, 1832 which does not agree with the above. His gravestone in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery shows Sept. 13.
