Maria Catherine Elting was born in Kingston, Ulster county, New York, on December 18, 1835, and was married to Cornelius Van Wey December 17, 1854, at Kingston, New York. They came to Iowa 56 years ago and she has since made her home in Frankville with the exception of two and one-half years spent with her children in Waterloo. Eleven children were born to them, five sons and six daughters. One son, Charley, died at the age of five and a daughter, Laura, at the age of 18. The remaining children, George H. and DeWitt of Frankville, Mary, Mrs. G. E. Webster of Ossian, Ada, Mrs. G. E. Bobenizer of Waterloo, John J. and Nellie, Mrs. L. C. Spaun of Frankville, Emma, Mrs. Frank Peck of Waterloo, Bert of Waukon, Edith, Mrs. C. H. Waters of Postville are left to cherish the memory of a kind and loving mother. She is also survived by sixteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren and a brother George Elting of New York. Her husband preceded her in death Nov. 6th, 1897. She died suddenly Friday morning, Feb. 28, at the home of her son George, having attained the age of 77 years, 2 months and 10 days. She had been as well as usual the previous evening on retiring, but on failing to rise at the usual time the next morning investigation proved that she had peacefully and quietly passed away in her sleep, death being due to apoplexy. Mrs. Van Wey united with the Presbyterian church in 1895 and has lived a true Christian life. Having resided here for so many years she was well known and beloved by all who knew her, and she was grandma to everyone. The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Young of Waukon and she was laid at rest in the village cemetery by the side of her husband. The children desire to express their sincere thanks to all those who so kindly assisted them, and also for the beautiful flowers.
Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Bovenizer, Mrs. Frank Peck and Miss Lepha, Mrs. R. W. Carter and Miss Verna Webster of Waterloo, Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Webster of Ossian, Bert Van Wey of Waukon, Miss Maude Van Wey of Decorah came to be present at the funeral of their mother and grandmother Mrs. M. C. Van Wey. All returned to their homes Sunday with the exception of Mrs. G. E. Bovenizer and Mrs. Frank Peck and Lepha and Miss Maude Van Wey, who remained for a few days’ visit.
