OBITUARY.
On Thursday morning last at her home on east Water street Mrs. Sarah Ackley Sanford passed away after an illness of some duration, due largely to infirmities of old age.
Sarah A. Ackley was born at Temple N. Y., on Sept. 14, 1831, and in the year 1851 at Norwich, N. Y., was married to Walter P. Sanford. They resided in the east until 1858 when they moved to Chicago where they made their home for two years. In 1860 they came to Decorah to take up a residence that has been continued ever since. During the ensuing four years after coming here they were host and hostess at the old Winneshiek hotel. They had but one child—Wm. A. Sanford—who resides at Cherokee. Mr. Sanford died several years ago.
As an early day resident here Mrs. Sanford acquired a wide acquaintance and won many friends by her kindness and thoughtfulness. She was a devoted mother as well and her memory will be cherished as one who was worthy.
The funeral was held Saturday afternoon at the home, Rev. M. Willett officiating, and interment was made in Phelps cemetery.
