Dr. L. M. Small, Ionia, Physician, Called by Death
Dr. L. M. Small passed away at his home in Ionia, Monday evening, March 30, 15 9:40 p. m. after being confined to his bed for almost seven months following a stroke of paralysis.
Lawrence Madison Small, son of Dr. Robert and Henrietta Small, was born February 24, 1867, at Clermont, Iowa. He received his education at the Decorah high school, Breckenridge Institute, Valder Business College, The Rush Medical School of Chicago, and the Marion Sims College of Medicine at St. Louis, Missouri.
On June 20, 1893, we{sic} was united in marriage to Lita Garland at the home of her brother, J. C. Garland, in Dubuque, Iowa. They went to house-keeping in Decorah, where Mr. Small had built his own home. Four children came to bless this union: (Esther) Mrs. Grover Little of Naperville, Illinois; (Ruth) Mrs. Robert Halwig of Marthon, Wisconsin; and (Lois) Mrs. F. W. Wellborn of Cedar Falls; one son, Robert Frederic, died in infancy. After living in Decorah for several years, they moved to Waterloo where he practiced medicine until fifteen years ago, when he moved to Ionia, where they have since resided. When he was nineteen years of age he joined the Methodist church, and all his life he has been a good Christian man, a great lover of his home and his community.
Dr. Small has been in failing health for the past two years, suffering with chronic heart trouble, but he was patient and uncomplaining thru it all and was reconciled to go when his Maker called him home. He was a kind and loving husband and father, a true friend and a kind and thoughtful neighbor.
For almost seven months he has been confined to his bed, a constant care to his faithful wife who has tenderly cared for him. She, with the three daughters and six grandchildren, namely: John, James, and David Little and Bruce, Jennifer and Virginia Wellburn, and one half sister in Ohio are left to mourn his passing.
It is largely through his untiring efforts that Ionia offered a full high school course to its young people.
Dr. Small was gifted as a sculptor, and the statue of Lincoln on the public school grounds at Ionia, was made by him and will long be a silent reminder of his artistic ability and his desire to uplift the thought of humanity.
The funeral was held Thursday morning at the Congregational church in Ionia at 10:30 a. m., with Rev. Halbert officiating, and burial was in the Phelps cemetery at Decorah beside his parents.
