Death of An Old Settler.
John Thomas McMullen was born on June 11th, 1841{?}, at Woodstock, McHenry county, Illinois, and died at his home three miles south of Burr Oak, Iowa, May 2d, 1911, aged sixty-nine years, ten months and twenty-one days. He was very ill with typhoid fever about fifteen years ago, from which he never fully recovered, but gradually failed, and about four months ago he took to his bed, and daily became weaker until his death. Deceased was the eldest son of Robert and Martha McMullen, and with them came to Winneshiek county, Iowa., in 1851, where he has since resided with the exception of six years spent in Nebraska and western Iowa. He was one of Winneshiek county’s oldest setters.
December 8th, 1880, he was united in marriage with Miss Sarah C. Coleman who, with five children, Adelbert, Mary, Katherine, Clara and Minnie, survive him. One son, John David, died Jan. 5, 1907. He is also survived by two brothers and three sisters, James McMullen, Decorah, Iowa, Samuel McMullen, Canistota, S. D., Mrs. John Clark and Mrs. Geo. Headington of Montrose, Colo., and Mrs. Henry Persse, Camp Stool, Wyo., besides several distant relatives and many friends and neighbors. The funeral services were held in the M. E. church at Burr Oak, May 4th, 1911, Rev. Schepple officiating.

John McMullen, a well known farmer, died at his home three miles south of town last Wednesday evening at seven o’clock after a lingering illness from consumption. Funeral was held at the M. E. church Friday afternoon, Rev. Schepple officiating. He leaves a wife, one son and four daughters to mourn the loss of a loving husband and father. The family have the sympathy of their many friends in this community.

Transcriber’s Note: His gravestone in Burr Oak Cemetery indicates he was born in 1840.
