DIED AT INDEPENDENCE.
Miss Elizabeth Wendling Succumbs to Infirmities of Old Age and Injuries Sustained by a Fall.
Word came to Decorah acquaintances last Friday morning of the death of Miss Elizabeth Wendling at Independence. Her remains were brought to Decorah Friday night and funeral services and interment occurred Saturday morning, the remains being placed at rest in Phelps cemetery beside those of her brother. The following remarks, delivered by Dr. M. Willett at the funeral, tell much that is not known to many who did not enjoy Miss Wendling’s acquaintance:--
Elizabeth Wendling was born in Niederbronn, France, March 31st, 1832, the eldest of nine children. She came to this country with her parents about 1848 and settled in Cheekowago, New York. From there the family moved to Jefferson, Iowa, in the early fifties. Deceased afterwards lived in Chicago for a number of years and came to make her home in Decorah about 1885. Her brother, Geo. L. Wendling, was for a number of years, up to the time of his death in 1887, a prominent and successful business man in this city. The only surviving member of the family is a sister, Mrs. M. W. Bouton of Denver, Colo.
Miss Wendling was a conscientious Christian woman, a liberal contributor to several charities, and numerous families can testify to her generous disposition. She was a woman of strong likes and dislikes, a great reader and well posted on both secular and religious topics. The last few years of her life were saddened by reason of physical disability and a weakening of mental faculties which left her at times under the spell of strange hallucinations.
A fall and exposure the first of this year rendered her helpless and so impaired her mind that on February 11th she was removed to the state hospital at Independence, where she passed away on Thursday evening, April 20, 1911. Interment was in Phelps cemetery last Saturday at 10 a.m., Dr. Willete{sic} officiating.
