OBITUARY.

Another of the earliest settlers of Fremont has passed away. This time Death has called one of our best known and respected citizens—one whose circle of real friends was wide and extended, and whose loss will be felt far and hear. Levi G. Burton was born in Crawford county, Penn., September 8, 1828, and came with his parents to Winneshiek county, Iowa, in 1854. He remained with his parents until 1862, when he enlisted at Frankville in Co. K. 38th Iowa Infantry, under Capt. Allen. They were afterward consolidated with the 34th Iowa, where he served to the end of the war, September 1865. In 1867 he was united in marriage with Miss Lucetta J. Kendall, eldest daughter of the late S. G. Kendall. Six children were born to this union, of whom two died in infancy. Four daughters—Mrs. Allen Clink of Kendallville, Mrs. Elmo Stephenson of Spencer, Iowa, and Misses Edna and Mattie—his widow, two grandchildren, two sisters and many other relatives. He died of pneumonia March 27th, 1911, after an illness of six days.

Mr. Burton was a man whose influence was great n the community where he lived, and good. His convictions were strong and one always knew where to find him. Although not a professed Christian, he thought and talked much on the subject of religion, and had faith in our Heavenly Father’s mercy and goodness. His funeral was held in the Methodist church in Kendallville, and was attended by a very large number from this and sur{r}ounding towns attesting to the regard in which he was held. The Rev. Mr. Luce preached an excellent and comforting sermon, a choir from Cresco furnished some beautiful selections of music, and a profusion of choice and beautiful flowers adorned the casket. Mr. Burton was a member of the Order of Free Masonry, and a delegation from the Cresco lodge were present. Banker Thomson gave a short address on the subject and benefits of the order., eulogizing the deceased, and the closing services at the grave were conducted by the Masons.

Transcriber’s Note: His birth date above does not agree with Find a Grave information. Find a Grave shows he was born Sept. 8, 1839 and died March 37, 1911. He is buried in the Kendallville-Eddy Cemetery.
