Harold Robert Amsbaugh, age 75 years, of rural Cresco, Iowa, died at his home on Friday July 14, 2023, following a brief illness.

A small, private graveside service will be held at Phelps Cemetery in Decorah, IA.

Harold (Hal) was born in Oakland, California on August 7, 1947, to his parents Harold Orville Amsbaugh and Edith Wurgaft.

Hal’s love of learning began early in his life. He would commute 2-3 hours a day to attend a boy’s private college prep school, Lick- Wilmerding in San Francisco. After high school, he attended University of California, Berkeley, followed by USC Los Angeles for Medical School. He then completed four years of residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN in Pathology.

Upon completion of schooling, he worked as a Pathologist in Oregon, Washington state and most recently Iowa, where he retired after 31 years of service, sharing the practice with Dr. Van Peenan until 1995.

Hal loved to learn and was rarely seen without a book in his hands. He also loved nature, hikes, exercising and his rescued pets. He often worked as a volunteer at pet shelters in Iowa and Arizona. His own furry children included three cats and one dog.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 31 years, Angie Amsbaugh. He is preceded in death by his mother Edith and father, Harold, and stepbrother Bill. Hal was a generous and gentle spirit and loved by the many people he encountered during his life. He will be sorely missed.

Memorials can be made to the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah, and the Decorah Humane Society

Cards may be sent to Angie Amsbaugh at P.O. Box 426, Cresco, IA 52136.
