John French was born in Ripley Co., Indiana, July 20, 1838, and died Nov. 10, 1910, at the age of 72 years, 3 months and 20 days. When the civil war broke out he volunteered at the age of 23 and enlisted in Co. A. 37th regiment of Indiana, and served his country faithfully until March 6, 1863. On his return home the same year he was united in marriage to Rachel Davis and in 1865 they came to Winneshiek county, Iowa, where he engaged in farming until 1905, when his wife died. Five children were born to them, four daughters and one son, the eldest daughter Mrs. Sarah Coon, passing away at Estherville in 1895. The remaining children are Sophia, Mrs. Ernest Monroe of Frankville; Maure, Mrs. Walter Coon of Estherville; Carrie, Mrs. Irvin Hughes of Frankville, and Thomas of Decorah. About two years ago a cancer developed in his mouth and although he sought medical aid at various hospitals it was of no avail and several months ago he came to the home of his daughter Mrs. Hughes, who lovingly and tirelessly cared for him during his remaining days. He was always patient and bore his sufferings uncomplainingly until death came to his relief. A good man is gone and another old soldier has answered the last roll call. The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Sunday morning, Rev. Ziegler officiating, after which the members of the G. A. R. took charge and conducted the services at the grave, the Sons of Veterans acting as pall bearers. The sympathy of the community is extended to the bereaved ones.

Transcriber’s Note: He is buried in the Frankville Cemetery.
