“Plan your work and work your plan.” If you knew Barbara Wagner Welgos, she probably said this to you at one time or another. It was one of her favorite quotes. She used these words to not only guide many others on their life journeys, but it was these words that provided the foundation for living her entire life with purpose and meaning.

Barbara Jane was born August 22,1922, the second of four children born to Honus and Nerma (Minerva) Wagner. She grew up in Riverside, Illinois, graduating from Riverside High School in 1940. Barbara received her degree from Grinnell College in 1944, double majoring in speech and psychology. She married Clarence “Joe” Welgos, her high school sweetheart, in 1946. They made their home in Decorah, raising three daughters. Barb’s professional career centered around Luther College, being hired in 1963 as Counselor to Women and then Supervisor of the College Health Service until her retirement in 1984. Her passions were her family (both immediate and extended, which included many former Luther students), golf (which she enjoyed well into her 90’s at Oneota Golf & Country Club), knitting, baking/cooking, P.E.O. (being an 80+ year member), reading, church activities and keeping in touch with her many friends.

Barb was preceded in death by so many friends and family as she lived her 100 years. Among those, her husband, her parents, two of her son-in-laws, one grandson and her siblings and their spouses.

She is lovingly remembered and survived by daughters Jane Sidwell, Nancy (Tom) Peterson and Mary Brooks and her grandchildren Justin Klatt, Kara Klatt Moore, Carly Curtin Stahn, Maren Peterson Gardner, Megan Peterson Rask, Jon Peterson, and Laura Peterson Houillion and over a dozen great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to the First United Methodist Church (FUMC), Decorah.
