Betty Jean Nelson, age 95, died Wednesday May 10, 2023, at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.

There will be no formal services.

Betty Jean was born August 31, 1927, in Colby, Wis., to her parents Harry and Ethel Bender. She attended and graduated from Colby Union High School. Betty Jean went on to graduate from State Teachers College in Oshkosh, Wis. With this education she taught high school English.

Betty Jean was united in marriage to Dr. Frank F. Nelson on Oct. 25, 1952, at the United Methodist Church in Colby, Wis.To this union two children were born: Philip and Mark.

In 1963, the family moved to Decorah. Along with teaching, Betty Jean enjoyed giving back to the community. She was an active member in civic and volunteer activities such as AAUW, serving on the Decorah school board as president and member, the Stephens Ministries, and as a hospital volunteer.

Betty Jean is survived by her son Philip of Cresco.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Dr. Frank Nelson (2010), son Mark W. Nelson (2005), daughter-in-law Jerilyn Nelson, brother Bryce Bender, sister Barb Schmidtbauer, and sisters-in-law Barbara Bottger and Phyllis Latimer.
