James was born on December 3, 1944, the son of Daniel and Laura Mae (Vsetecka) Meyer of Fort Atkinson, Iowa. He grew up on the family farm and took over the Meyer Hereford Farm in 1968. James enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1965 until 1971 as a Supply Clerk. He worked many years with Wapsie Produce. He was very involved with the local community as part of the Farmers Co-op Board, a member of the Jaycees, working many events that include the 4th of July in Spillville and Rendezvous Days in Fort Atkinson, and a lifetime member of St John’s Parish and active member of the South Winn Country Club. Thanks to his military service he was able to join The Huber-Steffes American Legion Post #672. He served as the Post Commander for 24 years. He also was a Fourth District Legion Commander and served on multiple committees for The Department of Iowa. James was very active with his military comrades in making sure their career and services were honored in their eulogies. James was also a member of the Forty and Eight organization. But most of all he loved the farming life. His son Christopher joined him in the farming fight in 1989. He was always up before dawn to help get his cows milked to start the day. Two of his passions were taking care of his Hereford cows and driving his International tractors. He also enjoyed going deer and coon hunting with his family and friends.

He met Janice at Turkey Valley High School were they both went to school. James graduated in 1962. They were married July 2, 1966.
