Nilus Philip Imoehl, 92, of Ossian, Iowa passed away Friday, April 7, 2023 at Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, Iowa. Nilus was born on July 19, 1930 to Frank and Angela (Hageman) Imoehl on a farm near Festina, Iowa. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in the Festina through the eighth grade. Nilus proudly served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953.

On August 18, 1953, Nilus was united in marriage with Jenny Holthaus at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, Iowa. Nilus started farming near Festina and in 1957 moved to a farm near Castalia, Iowa. He retired in 1995. Nilus was a member of St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church, Ossian American Legion and was on the board of Ossian Senior Living.

He enjoyed tinkering, inventing, welding and fabricating. There were very few projects around the farm that he didn’t do himself, whether it was pouring concrete, building sheds, shingling, or welding and repairing. Everything was at least twice as strong and twice as heavy as it needed to be. He even built a fireplace for the family room out of limestone collected (by his kids) from a pasture. He created the pancake griddles currently use by the Castalia and Ossian Fire Departments. The hospice staff was surely familiar with his tape measure and his newest project that he was working on. He also loved to dance, play cards and golf and occasionally a drink of Walkers and water.

Surviving Nilus are his children, Duane Imoehl of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Eileen (Dennis) Linderbaum of Ossian, Iowa, Lois (Ed) Albertson of Calmar, Iowa, Gary (Leanne) Imoehl of Ossian, Iowa, Lenny (Gwen) Imoehl of Castalia, Iowa and Mark (Lynn) Imoehl of Castalia, Iowa; fourteen grandchildren; twenty- six great-grandchildren; one sister, Corrina Steinlage of New Hampton, Iowa and many nieces and nephews.

Nilus was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-four years, Jenny Imoehl on October 29, 2017; a son in infancy, Leo Imoehl; great-granddaughter, Brooke Linderbaum; his parents, Frank and Angela Imoehl; and six siblings, Jerome Imoehl, Valeria Lensing, Ralph Imoehl, Eleanora Franzen, Merlin Imoehl and Laverne Imoehl.
