KILLED BY THE CARS.
An Old Lady Run Down Between Calmar and Conover
After train No. 3, the regular day train to Minneapolis, left Calmar Monday shortly after noon and had fairly gotten under headway the engineer was startled to see a woman walking along the track a mile from the station, indifferent or unaware of any danger. The whistle was sounded loud and long but the woman paid no attention. The brakes were applied with full force and the engine reversed and everything possible done to stop the train but without avail. The engine struck her square in the back, hurling her ten feet off from the track and breaking her neck, killing her instantly. The train was stopped and the body taken back to Calmar. The deceased was Martha Uggen, a resident of Calmar for the past thirty-five years and she was on her way to visit a daughter at the time of the accident. She was about 85 years old and quite deaf, which accounts for not hearing or paying attention to the train.
