James Edward McIntosh, Sr., age 81, passed away on Dec. 14, 2022 peacefully in the presence of friends and family at Wellington Place in Decorah.

Born 1941 in Kings Mill, Ohio, Jim grew up in Madison and Moore’s Hill Indiana, where he discovered a passion for education and science. He graduated from Moore’s Hill High School, then Ball State Teachers College, later obtaining a BS degree from Oregon State University. Over a long career in education

Jim was a caring and engaged science teacher and school administrator, finishing his career with the State of Wisconsin as a financial adviser for schools around the state. Jim shared his life with two wonderful families. With first wife Gloria he had 4 children: David, Andrew, Rebecca, and James. In 1986 Jim married Patricia and joined the lives of her two children Kelly and Michael. Jim is survived by all these family members.

Jim was a pan enthusiast who enjoyed learning new things and engaging in projects with zeal. Over the course of his life, he was active in biking, and woodworking. He developed a passion for music, eventually becoming a keyboardist in a rock band. In his retirement he developed a love for participating in local theatre. With a deep sense of justice and civic responsibility Jim was active in political life, helping to support a variety of causes and running for office himself.

Much of Jim’s life was dedicated to helping others in the community be it through teaching or civic work, simple kind acts or a humorous story. Dedicated to the exploration of philosophical and spiritual connections in our lives, he was also active in church life.

Jim shared his talents with several Universal Unitarian fellowships in Madison, Wisconsin, The Villages, Florida, and Decorah, Iowa.

Jim’s Celebration of Life will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 18, at The Lingonberry, 218 W. Water Street, Decorah. Public is invited. Memorials can be made to St. Croix Hospice or to the family for a memorial bench at Wellington Place.
