Mr. and Mrs. David Darling, although in very poor health, were able to ride over and see their sister Mrs. Briggs on Thursday, in her sickness.

Our town was greatly shocked about 6 o’clock p. m. on Saturday when the news came to us that Mrs. Lucy Briggs was dead. She had been in feeble health for some years but what we may call her last sickness was of short duration. The week previous she spent with her granddaughter, Mrs. Zoe Reed. On Sunday, the 11th, not feeling as well as common, she was taken to her home on the old Briggs farm, where she gradually grew weaker until the end came. Everything was done for her comfort that was possible. In absence of Dr. Emmons, Dr. Woodward was called from Decorah and when Dr. Kessel was visiting their neighbor Mrs. Donlan, he was called in but her extreme weakness gave but little hope. Still the family thought she would be with them much longer. She bid the daughter, Mrs. Myra Smith goodby, told her to go home and get a little rest, and come back in the morning, and fell asleep and in fifteen minutes she was gone. We shall miss Mrs. Briggs from our circle of acquaintances very much. Most of her life had been spent in Burr Oak, and her long residence had endeared her to many, Lucy Ervin was born March 24, 1840, at Flowerfield, Mich., and died July 17, 1909, at the home of her daughter Mrs. Laura Cox, Burr Oak, Iowa. Aged 69 years. She was united in marriage to Elijah Briggs in February 1857, who passed away Nov. 4, 1903. To them were born three boys and two girls, four of whom live to mourn the loss of a loving mother. The son Charley was called from earth May 21, 1901. She also leaves three brothers, three sisters, none of whom were permitted to be present at her funeral on account of age and distance, all of them older than Mrs. Briggs. She had fifteen grandchildren, one great grandchild and a host of friends.
