NATHAN DRAKE.
One of Glenwood Township’s Earliest Pioneers Passed Away Last Saturday Morning.
Nathan Drake, whose residence in Winneshiek county and on the farm where he died dates back to 1851, died on Saturday morning last, March 20th, at about 10:30 o’clock.
Mr. Drake was born in New Jersey on Sept. 14, 1831. When thirteen years of age the family moved to Mason County, {?}, where they resided until 1851, when they came to this county and took up land in Glenwood township. On Aug. 17, 1865, the deceased was married to Phoebe Wise, and she with their children—Walter N. Drake, of Modale, Dr Leonard S. Drake of Chicago, Lawrence and Caddie Drake and Mrs. S. E. Brickner of Decorah survive him. Of his parental family one brother (A. K. Drake of Decorah) and one sister (Mrs. Wilson Wise of Artesian, S. D.), survive also.
For the past two years Mr. Drake has been in failing health and during the winter he has been confined to the house. Saturday morning he arose and was apparently in his usual health. His death came suddenly while seated in his chair, and was due to complications incident to old age.
In his earlier years Mr. Drake was a man of considerable activity in his township taking much interest in the affairs that concerned the people in general. He was a good citizen and kind father whose departure will be felt at home and among his friends and neighbors. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock at the house, Rev. Wn. McVettie officiating, and was largely attended.
