Serenus Elsbernd, age 95, of Fort Atkinson, IA, died on Friday, November 25, 2022, at his home in Fort Atkinson.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 30, 2022, at St. John’s Catholic Church, 201 Oak Street in Fort Atkinson, IA with Rev. Nick Radloff presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 29, 2022, at the Helms Funeral Home Chekal Chapel, 201 Main Street in Fort Atkinson, IA and from 9:30 a.m. – 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday morning at the funeral home.

Serenus was born on April 12,1927 the son of Anton and Rosalia (Timp) Elsbernd in Fort Atkinson, IA. He graduated from Fort Atkinson Public School in 1946. He served his country in WWII from 1946 to 1947 and in the Korean Conflict from 1950 to 1952.

Serenus was married on February 12, 1955, to Margaret Krivacek. They raised five children.

In 1955, Serenus was hired by Frudden Lumber Company to manage Calmar Ready Mix in Calmar, IA. In 1967, he was hired by Farmers Coop in Fort Atkinson, IA to run the gas truck until his retirement in 1990.

Serenus was involved in COF (clerk), The American Legion and as a Fireman. He enjoyed camping, wood working, hunting, fishing and playing cards.

Serenus is survived by his wife: Margaret and their five children: Mel (Margie) Elsbernd, Ossian, IA; Dale (Cathy) Elsbernd, Decorah, IA; Nora (John) Kehoe, Oxford, IA; Joan (Rich) Whipple, LeRoy, MN; Ellen (Ardie) Johnson, Lanesboro, MN. Sixteen grandchildren and thirty-four great grandchildren. Sisters: Rose Lansing, Darlene Lansing and Alice Myers. Sisters-in-law: Alice Phillips, Vi Krivacek and Alice Elsbernd.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Anton and Rosalia (Timp) Elsbernd. Siblings: Leo (Helen) Elsbernd, Marie (Gerhard) Setter, Rita (Leonard) Nolte, Wilfred Elsbernd, Andrew Elsbernd and Edward in infancy. Brothers-in-law: Virgil Lansing, Clarence Lansing, Leonard Myers, Art (Christine) Krivachek, Marvin Phillips, Sonny Krivacek. Sisters-in-law: Bea (Paul Glass) (Albert) Tinderholt, Corina (Ron) Scholbrock.
