George Loomis, age 68, of Decorah, passed away peacefully Oct. 1, 2022 at home surrounded by his family.

George was born to Edward and Marie (Sheriff) Loomis in Waukon, on Sept. 21, 1954. He graduated from Decorah High School in 1973.

George married Cindy (Whalen) Bechtel in 1974 and together they shared three children, Angela (Brandon) McConnell of Decorah, Tiffany (Heather) Loomis of Madison, Wis., and Zachary Loomis of Maquoketa. George and Cindy later divorced. After high school, George worked for Thorton Feeds for several years. He then went to work for Knight Distributing of Decorah before joining Frito Lay in 1986. George moved to Valparaiso, Ind., in the early 90’s to take on the role of regional sales manager for Swisher International, a position he held until his retirement in 2017.In 2018,

George reconnected with life-long friend, Regina (Beisker) Feuerhelm and together they enjoyed many days camping, dancing, and being outdoors. On Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022, George married Gina, the love of his life, at Whalen Cabin in Decorah surrounded by their children, grandchildren, and friends. With this marriage, George gained an extended family including step-children Gabe Feuerhelm of Cedar Rapids, Mike (Julie) Feuerhelm, Decorah, Sarah (Joe) Christen of Waukon, IA, and Rachel Feuerhelm of Cape Coral, Fla.

George enjoyed sports and competition throughout his life including football and wrestling in high school and many summers playing slow-pitch softball. It was golf that George loved most – his favorite way to spend a day, rain or shine. A day on the course for George was anywhere between 36 to 72 holes shared with good friends. George and Lee Ellickson were often the first to tee-off and the last ones off the course spending many days visiting and perfecting their swings. He was a regular on the course at Silvercrest in Decorah and was a member of the Tri City Golf Club in Luana where he also worked part-time as a groundskeeper. He also enjoyed hunting deer and pheasant.

George was lovingly referred to as “Grandpa George” to 20 grandchildren: Logan and Lauren McConnell; Gage, Gunner and Gavin Jones; Madilyn and Parker Loomis; Chloe (Mason) Hasty, Chelbe (Chace) Dunn, and Wren Feuerhelm; Lucas, Elly, Kenric and Stella Christen; Jeron, Marri and Audrey Feuerhelm; Treyven and Raymond Calixte, and Kai Feuerhelm.

George is also survived by wife, Regina Feuerhelm of Decorah, his mother, Marie of Lansing, his brothers Lee of Lansing,Tom (Sandy) of Beverly Hills, Fla., and sister J’Neane Loomis (Kevin Banks) of Eldridge; his children, grandchildren, and former wife, Mona (Schultz) Loomis. He is preceded in death by his father, Edward and brother Dennis.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Oct. 8, from 2 to 5 p.m. at The Elks Lodge, 402 W. Main Street, Decorah, IA 52101.
