Mrs. Robert F. Greer

Mrs. Robert F. Greer, who has been a resident of Decorah almost continuously since 1856, died Saturday at her home on Vernon street and was buried Monday, Rev. M. Willett officiating at the funeral and interment.
Mrs. Greer’s maiden name was Margaret Kennedy. She was born in Hemmingford, Canada East, and was about eighty years of age. When her brother John Kennedy came to Decorah in 1856 she accompanied him and was his housekeeper for two years when she returned to Canada. In 1860 Mr. Kennedy went back to his old home to be married, and when he and his wife came west Miss Kennedy accompanied them, making her home with them until March 19, 1870, when she was married to Robert F. Greer. This was a very happy union which was terminated by the tragic death of her husband. With the exception of one year that she and her husband resided at Algona, Decorah remained her home. Here in 1861 she united with the Congregational church, while the late Rev. Ephraim Adams was pastor. This allegiance and the faith that she then professed was maintained throughout the remainder of her life, and when health permitted she was a regular attendant upon services. Although of a quiet and retiring disposition, she was a woman of most kindly and pleasant disposition and made many friends. For a year or more she has been a sufferer from an affliction of the stomach and this, with the infirmities of old age, caused her death. Through it all she was patient and cheerful, and when the final summons came a smile upon her face told of the peace and happiness that had come to her.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows she died July 18, 1908. She is buried in Phelps Cemetery. Find a Grave shows she was born in 1834; however, it also shows a copy of the Decorah Public Opinion newspaper of July 22, 1908, page 2 where it indicates she was born in 1828 which agrees with her age of 80.
