The Late Halvor Garden.
Halvor Garden, whose death was noted in last week’s REPUBLICAN, was born in Vang, Valders, Norway, in February, 1828, and came to America in 1848, landing at New York on July 4. In company with a number of others he settled in Dane county, Wis., and after two years came to Winneshiek county to make his home. In the fall of 1853 he was married to Isabelle Opdahl, who survived him. To them were born twelve children. Three daughters died in infancy. The surviving children are William of Drayton, N. D., Evans of Fertile, Minn., Nettie (Mrs. Hovey) of Hillsboro, N. D., Emma (Mrs. Bervig) of Souris, N. D., Mary Annie (Mrs. Hagen) of Landa, N. D., Lillie, Lorenzo of Souris, and Benjamin of Lansford, N. D. The funeral was held last Friday at the Norwegian M. E. church at Washington Prairie and was largely attended by old friends and neighbors who united in paying tribute to Mr. Garden’s worth. Rev. Jacobson of Hillsboro conducted the services and Rev. A. Jacobson also spoke.
