DIED AT IOWA CITY.
James V. McRaith, a Former Well Known Decorah Railroad Man, Succumbs to Pneumonia.
The following notice of the death of James V. Mcraith, who was well known as an operator at the Decorah station at the C., M. & St. P. Ry., upwards of twenty-five years ago, is taken from the Iowa City Citizen of Monday:
James V. McRaith died Friday afternoon at his home, 120 East Harrison street, after a three days’ illness with pneumonia. His friends were unprepared for the news of his death, and many were unaware of his illness.
Mr. McRaith was a railroad man, practically his entire life having been spent in the service. In his line of work, he had few peers. A skilled operator and accountant, he began his career at Decorah, Iowa; later he took charge of a station in Parker, South Dakota, and at DeWitt, Iowa. The Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul railroad so appreciated his services that for a time he was called to Chicago and given a place in the general offices.
Mr. McRaith also served the Great Western and the Illinois Central as agent at Cedar Falls. About fourteen years ago he came to Iowa City as the assistant of Agent Breene.
Mr. McRaith was a man of genial and kindly disposition. The greatest pleasure in his life was in helping others. His last act was typical of his life, the cold which terminated fatally being contracted while acting as pall bearer of the late Miss Ryan whose remains arrived here from Denver a short time ago.
The immediate relatives of the deceased are his wife, Minnie Hutchinson McRaith, and four children Joseph, who is engaged in business at Cedar Rapids, Helen McRaith, city librarian, Abbie McRaith, a student in the university, and Louis McRaith.
The funeral was held this morning at 9 o’clock from St. Mary’s church and interment was in St. Joseph’s cemetery. A number of relatives from out of the city were present, including Mr. and Mrs. Hutchinson of Sioux City, parents of Mrs. McRaith, and Frank Hutchinson, her brother, of Cedar Rapids.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born Nov. 2, 1856 and died April 10, 1908.
