Almiran Smith was born May 18, 1838, at Port Dover, Canada. He came to Iowa in 1851, where he lived on a farm near Frankville until 15 years ago, when he removed to Decorah with his brother Ammi Smith. About 12 years ago he was hurt in a runaway and lost his mind from the injuries he received. But through all these years he has been cared for by his brother, who watched over him as tenderly as a little child, until eight weeks ago he became so much worse he was taken to the hospital at Independence, where he died. He had three brothers and two sisters, who have all passed away but his brother Ammi. The funeral services were held at the M. E. church yesterday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Willett of Decorah, and he was laid at rest in the village cemetery by the sides of his parents. Thus passes away a good man, one who was highly respected by all who knew him.
