Ida Ameling age 95, of Fort Atkinson, IA, died on Saturday, August 6, 2022, at Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, IA.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 11, 2022, at St. John’s Catholic Church, 201 Oak Street in Fort Atkinson, IA with Rev. Nick Radloff presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 10, 2022, at the Helms Funeral Home Chekal Chapel, 201 Main Street in Fort Atkinson, IA and also from 9:30 – 10:15 a.m. on Thursday morning at the funeral home.
Ida Margaret was born July 3, 1927, to Irvin and Agnes (Kuennen) Smith. Ida was baptized and confirmed at St Luke’s Catholic Church in St Lucas, IA. and received her education at St Luke’s Catholic school. On April 21, 1947, she was united in marriage to Clarence J Ameling and to this union nine children were born. They raised their children and farmed east of Fort Atkinson. Ida was a member of St John’s parish and held several positions within the parish. Her days were filled with gardening, sewing, crafts, card clubs, making noodles, camping and fishing and raising their children. One of her fondest memories was a trip with Clarence and son John to Germany to visit relatives. In 2008, Ida moved to Ft Atkinson and enjoyed a good card game or visit with neighbors and friends.
Ida is survived by her children Judy Hertges of Ossian, John (Dawn) Ameling of Toddville, Iowa, Janet (Roger) Koenig of Ossian, Joan (Gary) Johnson of Cedar Rapids, Joyce (Rod) Hicks of Soddy Daisy, TN, Jackie (Randy) Kuennen of Fort Atkinson, Joey Ameling of Fort Atkinson, Julie Ameling (fiance Ralph Rathbun) of Ossian and daughter-in-law Joan Ameling of Ossian. Grandchildren Ron (Marsha) Hertges, Brad (Karen) Hertges, Christian Ameling, Justin (Kim) Koenig, Jill (Chris) Pasbrig, Brandy Reese, Brooke (Justin) Ruley, Jason (Robin) Kruger, Dustin (Miranda) Hicks, Ashley (Matt) Nost, Brittany (Ben) Novotny, Courtney Kuennen, Sadie Goodwin and Brittany (Jacob) Loomis, 13 great-grandchildren and 1 great, great-grandchild, sister Margaret Wurzer, sisters-in-law Doris Smith, Arlene Huinker and Bernice Einck, along with many nieces and nephews.
Ida was preceded in death by her husband Clarence, son Jerry, son-in-law Dick Hertges, her parents Irvin and Agnes Smith, grandchildren Troy Hertges and Madison Gibson, sister Bertha (Bud) Dority, brother Alvin Smith, brothers-in-law Francis Wurzer, Joe (Bernice) Ameling, Richard (Addie) Ameling, Alfred (Elaine) Ameling, Marcella (Tony) Wurzer, Felix (Colette) Ameling, Pat Einck, Robert Huinker, Viola (Cletus) Mihm, and Irvin (Alma) Ameling.
