This community was terribly shocked on Friday at learning of the death of Miss Hilda Stoen. Although reports from the patient the last few days had not been encouraging, hopes were entertained that all might yet turn out well. But it was decreed otherwise by a higher power. Little do we know what the future has in store for us. Two weeks ago she was as strong and healthy a girl as you seldom see, and to-day she lies in a cold and narrow grave. The cause of her death was to all appearances very insignificant, in the beginning a mere little pimple on the upper lip, but it soon took on a malignant character and went from bad to worse. Severe erysipelas and septicemia, or blood poisoning developed which, in spite of her rugged constitution, in spite of the best of medical care, in spite of careful nursing, in spite of a mother’s tender care and prayers, in spite of a tender father’s hopes and supplications, in spite of everything that could be done, death claimed her, and left an aching void in the hearts of her parents and brothers. She was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Stoen, an unusually bright and exceptionally good girl, and was the pet of the family. The remains were brought from Decorah Friday and the funeral was held yesterday, (Sunday), from the Big Canoe church, funeral services being conducted by Rev. Seehuus and the interment being in the family lot in the Big Canoe cemetery.
She is not dead, she is only sleeping
Waiting for the angel’s call.
Upon a golden harp she’s playing,
With her God, in heaven, she’s staying.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows she was born Oct. 1893 and died February 6, 1908. She is buried in Big Canoe Lutheran Cemetery. It also shows her father as Endre.
