Helmer Clarence Forde of Freeport, passed away Monday, June 6, at the Veteran's Hospital in Des Moines, following complications from a mastoid operation.  He had been sick for several weeks.  He was a son of Ole and Margit Arneson Forde and was born in Bryant, S.D., April 26, 1888. At the age of seven years, following the death of his father, he came with his mother to Highlandville, Iowa, in which vicinity he lived until he moved to Freeport about three years ago.  In his residence here he gained the respect and friendship of the entire community. He was a World war veteran, entering the army in March, 1918, going to England in October of the same year, arriving home in December, 1918. On Dec. 24, 1919 he was united in marriage to Marie Hoover.  Nine children were born to the union. Two, Milton and Lyle, passed away in infancy.  The surviving children are Orlyn, Orris, Bernadine, Herbert, Helen, Robert, Richard, all at home. The wife and mother also survives, as well as the following brothers and sisters: Stella (Mrs. A.G. Aaby), Minot, N.D.; Mabel (Mrs. George Giddings), Roseglen, N.D. and Arthur of St. Paul. Mr. Forde was a Republican candidate for the office of county recorder of Winneshiek county in the June primaries this year, but due to failing health did little or no campaigning. He was a kind and considerate friend, a loving husband and father.  He will be greatly missed in the community. The remains were brought to Decorah Tuesday and are at the Fjelstul Funeral Home, from where services will be held Friday afternoon at one o'clock.  Church services in the Big Canoe church will be held at two o'clock. Due to the absence of the pastor, Rev. T.O. Tolo, who is in Minneapolis in attendance at the convention of the Norwegian Lutheran church of America, the funeral services will be conducted by Dr. Carlo A. Sperati of Decorah.  Interment will be in the Big Canoe cemetery.Decorah Public Opinion and Decorah Republican, June 9th, 1938
