LARS R. SEVERSON
Lars R. Severson, one of the Norwegian pioneers of Decorah, died Saturday afternoon at five o’clock after an illness of about three weeks. Mr. Severson was born in Norway, June 6, 1835, came to America in 1856 and stopped first at Lansing. The same year he came to Decorah and here his home has been since that time. He engaged in various pursuits about his first occupation here being in connection with the building of the old court house. For a number of years he was engaged in merchandising but for twenty years or more has not been in any active business.
In 1876 he was married to Maria Larson, who, with one daughter, Mrs. J. S. Alstad, survives. One son died in infancy.
Mr. Severson’s death was due to heart trouble. In his early years here deceased was a robust, energetic man. He never tired of telling his early experiences, which were many and varied. He formed a wide acquaintance and had a host of friends, many of whom were present at the funeral, which was held Tuesday afternoon at the United Lutheran church, Rev. O. E. Schmidt officiating. Interment was made in the Lutheran cemetery.
