Renee Hjerleid, age 84, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 29, 2022 at Aase Haugen Senior Services.
Visitation will be Sunday, June 5th from 2 pm to 5 pm at the Helms Funeral Home (formerly the Schutler-Balik Funeral Home) and 1 hour before the funeral service at Decorah Lutheran Church.
Funeral will be Monday, June 6th at 11 am at Decorah Lutheran Church. Interment will follow the service at Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah, IA.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name may be made to Decorah Lutheran Church.
Renee was born on December 21, 1937 in Hesper, Iowa, the ninth of ten children to Herbert and Lillian (Potratz) Welper. Renee graduated from Mabel High School, Mabel, MN in 1955. After high school she worked at Parker Pen in Janesville, Wisconsin and she was crowned Miss Parker Pen of 1959. On July 10, 1960 she was married to Homer Hjerleid; they were married for 61 years. Homer and Renee lived in Preston, Minnesota and Decorah, Iowa until 1967 when they moved to Loveland, Colorado, where she worked for the Hewlett Packard Corporation. Upon their return to Decorah in 1974, Renee worked as a clerk for the United Parcel Service until her retirement in 2001. Renee enjoyed church activities, music, gardening, sewing, bowling and cooking, but her most cherished time was spent with family. Whether it be with her brothers and sisters, sister-in-laws, her five children and their families she enjoyed visiting and attending all their activities. From athletic events to dance recitals to family reunions, these and more brought abundant joy to her life.
Renee is survived by her husband, Homer of Decorah, two brothers: Ron (Sharon) Welper of Waterloo, IA and Wordean (Janice) Welper of Mabel, MN. Five children: Gavin (Julie) Hjerleid of Mallard, IA; Geoff (Kristin) Hjerleid of Byron, MN; Jolene (Peter Buchman) Hjerleid of Los Angeles, CA; Jennifer Hjerleid of Los Angeles, CA and Garic Hjerleid of Decorah, IA. Nine wonderful grandchildren: Gannon (Alex) Hjerleid, Tiffin, IA; Taylor (Brandon) Buch of Fairfield, IA; Logan (Dave) Wall of Mt. Pleasant, IA; Payton Hjerleid of Mallard IA; Ian Hjerleid, of Byron, MN, Avery Hjerleid of Byron, MN; Olivia Hjerleid of St. Paul, MN; Lillian Buchman of Los Angeles, CA and Benjamin Buchman, Los Angeles, CA. Six beautiful great-grandchildren: Anastasia and Amelia Hjerleid, Brayton, Ryker and Brylee Buch and Granger Wall. Sister and brother in laws: Caroline (James) Weis, Decorah, IA, Sandra Kittelson, Decorah, IA, Betty Wilson, Decorah, IA and Deane Steine, Loveland, CO; as well as many others from her large extended family.
Renee was preceded in death by her parents; Herbert and Lillian, six sisters; Adeline Hoff, Arlyne Tollefson, Lorraine Anderson, Marilyn Wyllie, Charmie Steine, Lou Jean Hoff and one brother, Reginald Welper and one grandson, Garrett Hjerleid.
