Lucy Angeline (Hemesath) Hageman, 90, of Ossian, Iowa, died Friday, May 20, 2022, at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, Iowa. She was born February 15, 1932 to Frank and Bertha (Scheidelmantel) Hemesath in Ossian, Iowa. Lucy was one of 11 children; the eldest daughter. She was a lifelong member of St Francis de Sales Catholic Church and was educated through 10th grade at De Sales School. She completed her GED when her ninth child began school.

Lucy married Arnold August Hageman on June 12, 1951 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. Together they raised 11 children and farmed south of Ossian until 1981. Lucy was active over the years in the De Sales Rosary Society, the Ossian Garden club, and also volunteered with a quilting group that made and donated quilts to those in need. Lucy loved her family and was most happy when she was with all of her children at once. A favorite hobby was crocheting afghans and baby blankets for her children and grandchildren, which became prized possessions over the years. She enjoyed reading and made sure that books were available to her children as they grew up. Lucy loved to listen to her children and grandchildren reminisce about their childhoods. She let each of her children and grandchildren become who they wanted to be. She supported their life choices and decisions even though she did not always agree with them. She provided guidance through education and the Catholic faith, to which she was devoted. She did not travel often, but she cherished memories of trips to the Holy Land and to Singapore in the late 1990’s. She will be remembered for her good humor, her devotion to her family, and her unwavering faith.

Lucy is survived by nine children, Stephen (Dianne) Hageman, Becky (Dick) White, Dan (Deb) Hageman, Pat (Joe) Chilsen, Dale (Bonnie) Hageman, Jay (Barb) Hageman, Sara Oftelie, Lee (Bev) Hageman and Kyle (Dawn) Hageman; one sister, Donna (Hemesath) Kuennen; a daughter-in-law, Christina Hageman, and son-in-law, Jim May; 36 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Lucy was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Hageman in 1994; a daughter, Jackie (Hageman) May in 1995; a son, Andy Hageman in 2016; her parents, Frank and Bertha Hemesath; siblings, Robert Hemesath, Edmund Hemesath, Francis Hemesath, Charles Hemesath, Mark Hemesath, Benedict Hemesath, James Hemesath, Judy Ollendieck and Theresa Hemesath.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Arnold and Lucy Hageman Scholarship Fund.
