In our Castalia letter this week appears the obituary of A. W. Kramer, the best known business man of southeastern Winneshiek. His death took place on Monday, and the event will carry sorrow to hundreds of hearts. For forty-five years he has been of such worth to the community and region he served that few will at once realize the public loss that has come to them.

Amos Wickerson Kramer was born Jan. 21, 1829, in Dauphin Co., Pa. In 1950 he moved to Peru, Ill., where he engaged in cabinet making for seven years. He was married to Miss Mary A. Pennington Nov. 1, 1855, and two years later they moved to Hardin, Clay Co., Iowa, where they lived until 1861, when they moved to Castalia, where they have since resided. Unto them was born six children of whom Mrs. G. C. Toye of Northwood, Mrs. Nelson Gibbs of Council Bluffs, Mrs. A. M. Thomas of Seattle, and Arthur W. Kramer of Manchester, together with the widow, survive the father and husband. Mr. Kramer died at his home Monday, Oct. 22, 1906. The above speaks only in part the history of our honored citizen, who has made his home here and been one of the leading business men for over forty years. He commenced business here in a very modest way, but by economy and frugal habits accumulated a competence. For the last forty-five years Mr. Kramer may have been seen on our streets almost daily and had a very wide acquaintance with the people in this section of the country and had many warm friends all of whom sympathize with the family of the deceased in the loss of an indulgent father and kind husband. Mr. Kramer will be most missed in the home circle where he has spent most of his time since he retired from active business a few years ago. The funeral will occur to-morrow (Wednesday) and be conducted by the Masonic fraternity, of which organization the deceased had been an honored member for many years. The Rev. Margaret Olmstead of Decorah will preach the funeral sermon. All the children with the exception of Mrs. Thomas will be present at the funeral.
