Lowery, Russell L. 1914 - 1975

LOWERY, MATTER, LUNDTVEDT

Funeral services for Russell L. Lowery, councilman for Decorah's First Ward, were held Wednesday at Decorah Lutheran Church. Mr. Lowery died suddenly at his home at 719 Decorah Ave. July 14 at the age of 61. He had been employed by the Iowa Highway Commission for many years and was a life-long resident of Decorah.

Pastor Alden H. Hovda conducted the services. Burial was in Phelps Cemetery.

Serving as active pallbearers were Irvin Tieskotter, Earl Halse, Vernett Halverson, Alden Grinna, Gerald Headington and LaVerne Werhan. Honorary pallbearers were Raymond Stoen, Gordon Engen, Dave Taylor, Thomas Mikesh, Milo Harnack, Woodrow Barth, Robert Drew, Carsten Quam and Robert Casper.

Fellow council members and also members of the lodges to which he had belonged were seated in a group at the funeral services to pay their last respects to Mr. Lowery.

Mrs. Otto Ruen was organist and accompanied the congregation as they sang hymns. Funeral arrangements were made by Steine Funeral Home.

Mr. Lowery is survived by his mother, Maude Lowery of Decorah; his wife, the former Edna Matter, daughter of Mrs. Edward Matter of Decorah; a daughter, Mrs. Roger (Mary) Lundtvedt of Ridgeway; a son, Richard Lowery of Decorah and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Horace.

Russell L. Lowery was born May 24, 1914 in Decorah, the son of Lester and Maude Lowery. He graduated from Decorah High School and also attended Luther College. He was married April 24, 1947 in ceremonies at Leon, Ia.

He was a veteran of World War II where he served three and one-half years in the Air Force in both the European and Pacific Theatres. He was a past commander of the VFW, past grand of the local IOOF Lodge, a member of the Decorah Elks Lodge and belonged to the Decorah Lutheran Church.

Mr. Lowery first ran for the City Council in 1969 with a pledge to serve all of the people in the First Ward, and he had been returned to office by the voters for three terms.
