Margaret Smith was born in Ottawa, Canada, Oct. 31, 1844, was married to Cyrus A. Harvey Nov. 12, 1862, and died at her home in Ossian, Iowa, Sept. 19. 1906.
Her early married life was spent at Ogdensburg, N. Y., and Detroit and other places in Michigan. In December, 1866, she with her husband moved to Ossian where she has since resided, with the exception of a few years spent in Montana. Her husband preceeded her in death many years, having passed away Feb.2 1, 1876. To them had been born five children—three boys and two girls--all of whom survive her and were present during her last days. Her eldest son George, located at Missoula, Mont., is in the employ of the N. P. Ry., H. A. at Mullan, Idaho, is foreman in the Wyoming stamp mill, J. Alex., at Spokane, in the employ of a building and contracting company. Her eldest daughter, Margaret, is the wife of H. P. Nicholson, Jr., of Ossian, and the younger daughter Kate has been the companion of her mother.
Mrs. Harvey’s life was spent in caring for the welfare of her children, whose sole support depended upon her in their childhood. How well she succeeded is manifest to all and no truer mother ever lived. Her remains were laid at rest in Hillside cemetery in Ossian, beside those of her husband, on Friday, Sept. 21, Rev. McVettie of Decorah officiating.
