Douglas Halverson, age 79, of Decorah, IA died Saturday January 1, 2022 at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah.

Visitation will be from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Ave in Decorah on Wednesday, January 5, 2021 with a Scripture Service at 4:00 p.m. with Rev. Dennis Niezwaag presiding.

Douglas was born August 30, 1942, the son of Roland and Geneva (Thompson) in Decorah, IA. He graduated in class of 1960 from South Winneshiek School. He was drafted into the United States Army and stationed in Germany where he served from 1964 to 1966. He married Donna Lundy on November 26, 1966 and later divorced. To this union six children were born; Michelle, Richelle, Brent, Dana, Joel and Bradley.

Douglas had multiple mechanical talents that he used throughout his life. He drove semi for many years; was a mechanic at Decorah Implement; and farmed with his family and on his own in Canoe Ridge. Later, he delivered propane for Skelgas, and then was a small engine mechanic at Usgaard and Smith before his health forced him into retirement.

Douglas enjoyed having a good conversation with his friends and sharing his unique sense of humor. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, as well as the VFW Post 1977. He liked to listen to polka music and kept updated on current events by watching Fox News. Even though he was not out and about every day, he often surprised his family by knowing what everyone was up to. Keeping up with his grandkids’ activities was important to him.

Douglas is survived by his three children: Brent (Jill) Halverson, Waukon, IA; Dana (Mark) Carolan, Decorah, IA; and Joel (Cyndi) Halverson, Choctaw, OK. Nine grandchildren: Madelyn, Zachary & Blake Jermier, Leslie & Nathan Halverson, Ava & Gavin Carolan, Luke & Luci Halverson. His mother: Geneva Halverson, Ossian, IA. Two siblings: Brenda Headington and Boyd (Jan) Halverson, Decorah, along with many nieces and nephews.

Doug as preceded in his death by his daughter Richelle Halverson; children Michelle and Bradley in infancy; his father, Roland; sister Judith Hovey; and brother in law William Headington. Aunts and uncles: Edna and LaMoyne Thompson, Richard Halverson, Virginia Halverson.
