Thompson, Knudt - Died 1906

Shortly after one o’clock Sunday morning Knudt Thompson passed away at his home on east Main street after an illness of less than two weeks.
Mr. Thompson was born Feb. 7, 1832{?}, in Kjerland, Hardanger, Norway. He came to America in 1854 and on the 19th of June of that year took up his residence in Winneshiek county, settling on the southwest quarter of Section 16, Pleasant township. For a time he made his home with the parents of the late Iver Larsen. In 1869 Mr. Thompson was elected sheriff of Winneshiek county and in 1871 was re-elected to the same position, serving in all four years He has filled sundry lesser positions of trust at various times and acted as administrator in settling up the estates of many of his countrymen. When the division came in the Lutheran church, Mr. Thompson allied himself with the United Lutheran church branch and to the time of his death was active I the work of that organization. For many years he has been secretary of the local church and since 1902 has been chairman of the Bord of Trustees of the conference. He was also treasurer of the Norwegian Mutual Insurance company of Winneshiek county.
In 1860 he was married to Guri F. Nesheim. Seven children were born to them, one dying in infancy. Those, with the mother, who survive are Mrs. Josie Haugen of Lae qui Parle county, Minnesota, Mrs. Julia Quandahl, Misses Ida and Mamie, and Theodore of Decorah and Walter of Chicago.
The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, brief services at the house at 2 o’clock preceding the public service at the United Lutheran church at 2:30. Rev. Eggen, a former pastor, came from Madison, Wis, to pay a final tribute to one who had been his friend and active supporter in the early days of the church in Decorah, and Rev. Hougen spoke in English. An unusually large attendance of friends, acquaintances and neighbors bespoke the high esteem in which Mr. Thompson was held by the community in which he was a pioneer.

Transcriber’s Note: His gravestone in the Lutheran Decorah Cemetery shows he was born in 1834.
