The Republican heard yesterday with regret, but not surprise, of the death of C. B. Pike, one of the old residents of Hesper township, and one of its most substantial upright citizens. An obituary is given in part by Hesper Happener in this issue, but a fuller one is promised for next week.

Another of the pioneers of Hesper passed away last evening, when C. B. Pike, who has been in poor health for several months, was relieved from his suffering. Mr. Pike was born Nov. 18, 1832, near St. Joseph, Mich., and came to Winneshiek county in 1852. A more extended obituary will be given later.

Calvin B. Pike was born Nov. 18, 1832, near St. Joseph Mich. While a young man he went to Indiana where in 1852 he was united in marriage with Miss Sarah Maxwell. In 1854 they came to Winneshiek county, where they have since made their home. Mr. Pike was one of a family of fourteen children, only one of whom survives him—Abraham Pike of Grand Rapids, Mich., who is 93 years of age. Mr. Pike’s death, on April 30th, was the first death in his family. He is survived by his wife, four daughters and two sons, E. E. of Lamar Colo., Mrs. Oscar Graham, Gardena, Cal., Mrs. W. C. Cook, Montevideo, Minn., Mrs. Geo. Rust, Boston, Mass., E. M. of Minneapolis, and Mrs. J. W. Daubney, Lakefield, Minn. Mr. Pike settled in Hesper when Burr Oak was the nearest post office, and McGregor the nearest market. He was always interested in the cause of education and did his share of service as a school director and as a township trustee. Was a progressive farmer, but a few years ago retired from active service and moved into the village. The funeral was held at the home at ll a.m. of the 3d, Mrs. Olmstead of Decorah officiating, assisted by Rev. H. C. Carter. Among those present were Mrs. W. O. Cook, Mrs. Geo. Rust, F. M. Pike, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Daubney and Wilson Daubney of Decorah, J. W. Daubney returned to Lakefield on the 4th and E. M. Pike returned to Minneapolis on the 5th.
